ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of what trauma is, including the types of trauma and adverse events that are likely to arise in pediatric populations. The benefit of trauma screening in primary care is discussed, along with practical considerations for operational and clinical workflows to allow for effective trauma screening practice. The case for comprehensive screening based on prevalence and risk factors is also presented. Additionally, the patient/family, clinician, and system-related barriers and important factors, as well as culturally appropriate considerations for screening, are discussed. The greater part of the chapter focuses on specific tools that are most psychometrically sound and of greatest utility in a pediatric primary care setting. Finally, a patient story that emphasizes particular aspects of trauma screening in pediatric primary care settings is presented.
