The Impact of Natural Resource Discovery on Exchange Rates: The Case of North Sea Oil

The exploitation of oil reserves in the British part of the North Sea transformed the indigenous oil extraction sector. Before 1975 its output, based on a few tiny onshore fields, was negligible; by 1984 it accounted for 6 per cent including natural gas of GDP and 16 per cent of exports of goods.
