ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a star teacher's commitment to go beyond just to focus on the individual student. It examines the ways that classrooms and schools are structured, acting where possible to create a just and equitable learning community for all students. Star teachers have confidence in their ability to engage students in activities that focus on higher-order, critical thinking, and analysis skills. Star teachers do not reject a text simply because it may seem too difficult. They find ways to make compelling text accessible for students, trusting that if the topic and the lessons are relevant and engaging, students will respond appropriately. Star teachers work with parents and community activists to challenge and change inequitable policies and procedures to have the services and resources that they need. Importantly, star teachers know what is happening in other school districts and in other geographic areas of their school district.
