ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author seeks to understand how space is produced through storytelling media in the digital age, as technologies such as mobile devices work alongside previous media forms to tell varied and wide-ranging stories of a location's meaning. It begins by drawing on the theories of spatial production proposed by as well as the scholarly literature on locative media and spatial narratives. Ultimately, the chapter discusses the range of perspectives on contested landscapes, analyzes the advantages of polyvocality for spatial production as well as the potential pitfalls and challenges created by these contested landscapes. It thus links the theories of spatial production to the applied media studies approach for analyzing these theories through the designs of locative storytellers and cultural landscapes. The chapter then looks at ways that narrative production using mobile technologies can effectively approach the challenges faced by this medium.
