ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a number of related themes to describe and explain the career context of research scientists within Higher Education Institutions: organisation and management; career structures; recruitment, selection and promotion; performance appraisal, training and development; equal opportunities; and career management. Each theme is illustrated by material from the case study carried out at Grantley University and will draw on material from the exploratory survey in order to expose some of the variations in approach employed. The main research effort at Grantley University School of Biological Sciences was directed towards basic research although some prominence was also given to applied research. University management is ostensibly a democratic process carried out through a complex committee structure. The upper academic structure consists of the Senate into which committees with defined areas of responsibility report. The aim was to create two administrative structures within the School of Biological Sciences: the Graduate School and the Undergraduate School, each with its own Director.
