ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the most important economic and social implications of globalization on the Arab countries, and suggests appropriate policies that can be applied to reduce the negative impacts and maximize the positive ones. Globalization has economic and social implications, particularly for Third World countries. The chapter focuses on assessing the likely impacts of globalization on economic growth in the Arab countries, and their vulnerability. It examines vintage of globalization embodied in General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 and implemented by the World Trade Organization through the enforcement of its rules and regulations. The chapter reviews different definitions and perceptions of globalization as derived from the literature. It describes the assessment of the social implications of globalization regarding employment and poverty and also explores the Arab countries to deal with globalization more effectively. From a socio-economic perspective, the Arab countries in many respects are not homogenous.
