ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of a comprehensive program of vocabulary instruction and then gives a detailed description of the part of the program most relevant to content area vocabulary instruction in some detail. The chapter has two themes: (a) that only a broad and multifaceted vocabulary program can markedly assist students in learning the vocabulary they need to succeed in school, and (b) that there are different word-word learning tasks and that these different tasks require different sorts of instruction. The chapter is divided into five major sections. In the first section, we give an overview of the comprehensive program and note the major role of contentarea teachers in putting the program into practice. In the second section, we discuss six word-learning tasks. In the third section, we discuss different levels of word knowledge that students may attain. In the fourth and longest section of the chapter, we discuss teaching procedures appropriate for each of the different word-learning tasks students face. Finally, in the fifth section, we discuss ways of selecting words to teach.
