ABSTRACT

Civil war and the overall tension between the two branches of the royal house continued until 1157, personified in the reigns of Erik Emune's son Svend, made king by the Scanians and the Zealanders, against Magnus Nielsen's son Knud, made king by the Jutlanders. Gregorius Dagsson had immersed himself in regional politics in favour of the King of the Viken area, Inge Haraldsson whom he had followed even during the civil wars from 1155 onwards; he fell in defence of Inge in January 1161. During the civil war, Kjeld travelled to Lund but was taken prisoner by Slav pirates and liberated, then 'friendlily received by king and archbishop' in a situation when there existed in Denmark 'another king'. On 18 October 1139, Bishop Rico of Roskilde had been killed in one of the many encounters in the civil war.
