ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the emergency management public education case studies, such as organized training for communities, volunteer emergency preparedness program, teaching emergency preparedness in schools, emergency preparedness in public transportation, public–private partnership for disaster preparedness, national public education effort, technology-based learning and local government preparedness campaign. Government-sponsored business preparedness certification program, which began in 2007, is designed to improve the ability of businesses and nonprofit organizations to respond to and recover from disasters. The mass media campaign included radio, television, and print ads to encourage New Zealanders to prepare for disasters. The centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) zombie campaign illustrates how creative messaging can pique interest and provide valuable information to people who might not otherwise visit the CDC site. But the zombie campaign marked a change in public attention given the enticing theme, and the existence of the message quickly went viral.
