ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to offer ways that personal narratives can guide us in developing curriculum to address social injustices. It discusses the boundaries of identities that women and minorities have to navigate. The chapter discusses the effects of stereotypes on the racial identity and how that can hinder the progress. The Iran hostage crisis happened nearly three decades ago, but it continues to be a part of the culture in a very significant way, more recently through Hollywood via the movie Argo and the Bravo! television series Shah of Sunset. The Shahs of Sunset is just the other side of the coin of Argo. It perpetuates the same kinds of stereotypes in a different environment, where there is room to express one's individuality. Women of color have to overcome the society-wide stereotypes and biases against them, before really gaining the trust of the students, and perhaps even colleagues.
