ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss three ways in which new technologies are being used to expand or enhance students' access and experiences with museum resources: virtual galleries and field trips, the use of mobile technologies to foster deeper engagement, and the use of augmented and virtual reality at historic sites. For each of these three emerging areas, they provide several exemplary projects and consider how these resources can be used to enhance how students learn history. Virtual museums provide access to the stories of peoples from around the world. In particular, virtual galleries and tours provide access to the histories and stories of people who may be marginalized in a history textbook or state curriculum. Specifically, many museums provide Web-based resources and virtual galleries or field trips, and others have gone a step further to integrate mobile technologies and augmented reality experiences at their museums and historic sites.
