ABSTRACT

The ecological university has a concern towards social institutions and, thereby, towards society as such. It follows that the ecological university will reach out across its whole ecosphere, engaging with all manner of institutions, both corporations – whether in the public or private or non-governmental sectors – and social institutions that are part of the fabric of society. The ecological university, therefore, has an acute institutional grasp and is adept at working out possibilities for itself, amid its institutional environment. The ecological university lives in multiple timeframes simultaneously. For centuries, universities have tried to ride both horses – particularity and universality. Across the world, universities are understood through universal categories of truthfulness, disinterestedness, openness, fair-dealing, carefulness, sincerity and honesty. The idea of the ecological university, as noted, is intimately associated with emergence. Feasibility may seem a strange criterion, in an audit of the idea of the ecological university.
