ABSTRACT

General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) had played a special role in the process of liberalization of the contemporary international trade. Nowadays that role has been taken over by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The strength of GATT could be seen in a record number of international negotiation rounds organised under its auspices. The problems of agriculture protection in the European Union, the protection resulting from the Common Agriculture Policy of member countries, were becoming a serious obstacle on the way to the final compromise. Non-governmental organizations play a very important role in decision making within the WTO. The decisions taken by the representatives of the governments participating in the WTO are, to a significant degree, influenced by various lobbies, such as organizations and unions of food producers, including trade unions. The trade unions active in an urbanized labor market had a significant influence on the decisions of governments, in the course of multilateral trade negotiations within GATT/WTO.
