ABSTRACT

President Khatami's election has been dubbed the 'second revolution', which marked the beginning of the 'Third Republic'. His administration called for the creation of a civil society, based upon an open political system. It has unleashed a plurality of voices that would never have been accepted under the previous two republics. The election represented the beginning of the movement away from conservativism, while it highlighted the lengths to which the conservatives were willing to go to maintain their grasp on power. The opposition movement was defined by its desire to disband the Islamic state and as such alienated many within Iran who, while believing in an Islamic state did not necessarily believe in the government's interpretation. Nobody epitomises the development in political ideals over the period of the revolution better than Adbullah Nouri. By looking at the binary opposition between the state and the people before and after the revolution.
