ABSTRACT

This Chapter deals with the socio-economic background of the field workers of Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Bangladesh. Most NGOs start their work with their clients by forming groups and saving money in the group fund. Compared to government jobs, jobs in the NGOs are insecure, have lower salaries and benefits, and the staff are burdened with heavy workloads, low status, little power and no pension. PROSHIKA is one of the largest NGOs in Bangladesh. Most field workers who worked in other NGOs before joining PROSHIKA worked for local NGOs and joined PROSHIKA for its reputation. SCF (UK) (Save the Children) is regarded as a Christian, foreign NGO. A major problem of access for such NGOs is that they are suspected of being involved in Christian evangelism. When SCF (UK) was gradually winding up its operations in Naria it retrenched many field workers in stages.
