ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines the emerging role of the Community in world politics in general and trade diplomacy in particular. It discusses the modifications of the constitutional rules regarding Common Commercial Policy (CCP). The book sets out the external and internal dimensions of European Union (EU) trade policy. It presents an overview of competing approaches in theorizing European politics. The book attempts to contribute to theoretical understanding of role of European Court of Justice (ECJ) and its jurisdictional activities. It summarizes the institutional development of the Common Commercial Policy. The book sketches a new institutionalist framework in an attempt to explain policy outcomes in different forums. It summarizes main findings, discusses the limits combining new institutionalist approaches and hints at future avenues of research. The book reviews the ongoing debate on the concept of 'accountability' and 'efficiency' and the dominating decision-making procedures in place.
