ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of Xiao Hui WANG. WANG is a Chinese artist and author living and working in Shanghai, China and Munich, Germany. WANG is established as an esteemed and influential artist in China. Her bestselling autobiography, My Visual Diary, describes her journey of pursuing her dream as a photographer in Germany and provides a detailed discussion of her photographic work and career. According to her project statement, My Last 100 Years is an extension of WANG’s self-portrait, but it is a collective self, not her personal self. WANG discusses the issue of life and death in her installation work, A-LIVE, where she had 5,000 fresh lotus pods on stems, with each of them standing in a green glass bottle with water in it. She then arranged them to form two triangular shapes in her exhibition in the Shanghai Art Museum in 2003.
