ABSTRACT

18 This chapter provides one example of a typical day of literacy instruction in a primary-level classroom, and Chapter 3 provides an example from an intermediate/middle-level classroom. Grades K through 2 are generally considered primary grades in elementary schools, and grades 3 through 6 are considered intermediate or middle-level grades. Although the remainder of this book focuses on small-group reading instruction, this chapter and Chapter 3 provide an overview of effective literacy instruction to show differentiated instruction in the context of a school day. Welcome to Ms. Palmer’s classroom. She has been teaching first grade for nine years, and last spring she was nominated by her district’s administrators and literacy specialists as an exemplary teacher of literacy. As you read, consider what exemplary instruction looks like in action. How does Ms. Palmer fit the necessary lessons into each day? How does she know which content to teach in whole-class lessons and how to differentiate her instruction in small-group lessons? How does Ms. Palmer find the time to monitor the progress of individual students?
