ABSTRACT

Today, in the opinion of the authors, there essentially are four approaches for calculating integrals of functions on the sphere (see also the classification presented by A. Townsend et al. [2016]):

Latitude-longitude techniques, matrix-free and so-called double Fourier sphere (DFS) methods,

Mesh-free (radial basis) methods including polynomial and spline exact methods,

Equidistributions involving low discrepancy methods,

Multiscale techniques using spherical wavelet variants.
