ABSTRACT

In addition to finding 'genes for' genetic disease, genetic researchers are also currently identifying genes involved in the development of behavioural traits such as intelligence. The primary aims of this research are to contribute to the scientific understanding of brain development and to develop interventions to assist those with low intellectual potential. However, this information could potentially also be utilised by parents to choose to have a child with a genetic predisposition to high intelligence.2 In this chapter, I unpack a potential objection to this technology: that it offers parents a reproductive choice they would be better off without.
