ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the range of different types of systems or technologies in which the approaches to knowledge organization. It reviews a number of types of systems that are available to support users in accessing information. All of these systems can be described as public access systems. Online search services offer access to a collection of databases and documents. Compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM) is essentially a different type of distribution media for information products. The basic stand-alone CD-ROM workstation provides a single user with access to a single disc. Nearly all new personal computers come equipped with CD-ROM drives; this provides an enormous installed base of CD-ROM drives. Network configurations have a significant impact on the way in which CD-ROMs can be exploited, especially in a multi-user environment. Most libraries now provide community information on Web pages, rather than via a library management system.
