ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book then seeks to compare conclusions derived from the intentional and structural levels with empirical conclusions drawn from three case studies in the Middle East, in South Africa and in the former Yugoslavia. It tested the validity of these self-reflective actors' views of the process with the empirical data gathered on the development and operation of European Foreign and Security Policy. It has also had to establish some theoretical relationship between two social phenomena: European Foreign and Security Policy and national foreign policy. In the book's review of traditional theories at the systemic, sub-systemic and state-level, none could provide a comprehensive description, explanation or forecast of the development of a European Foreign and Security Policy. It tests the validity of these self-reflective actors' views of the process with the empirical data gathered on the development and operation of European Foreign and Security Policy.
