ABSTRACT

The relocation and redistribution of the population has obviously affected the demographic evolution of Spanish villages, towns and cities. The duality of the Spanish territory economically active versus economically stagnant areas – which undoubtedly contributed greatly to the establishment and strengthening of regional imbalances, was first called into question in the 80s. The period of economic decline started in Spain towards the end of the 70s as a consequence of the delayed implementation of counteractive economic measures and the peculiar Spanish political situation in the mid 70s – the end of Franco’s dictatorship and restoration of Spain to democracy. The evolution of the Spanish economy and, in particular, the effects on it following the establishment of a certain model of territorial organization became especially relevant after 1959, when a notable, shift occurred in economic policies with the initiation of the Stabilization Plan.
