ABSTRACT

In the teaching of Irenaeus, incarnation and redemption are never separated. The whole life of Christ is bound together from incarnation to ascension and is construed in terms of His obedience by which He reverses and rescinds our disobedience. In the sections discussed in this chapter, Irenaeus is concerned to look at the 'royal exchange' in terms of the obedience of Christ's sufferings, and does so by concentrating on the 'suffering Servant' prophecies of Isaiah. The whole life of Christ is bound together from incarnation to ascension and is construed in terms of His obedience by which He reverses and rescinds our disobedience. The chapter discusses the 'royal exchange' in terms of the obedience of Christ's sufferings, and does so by concentrating on the 'suffering Servant' prophecies of Isaiah. It explores the clear understanding of Irenaeus that Christ's crucifixion cannot be separated from His resurrection, nor His resurrection from His crucifixion.
