ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses key features of global diplomacy: multiplication of issue areas and actors. It provides an overview of the issue areas in which diplomacy gets involved. The chapter identifies traditional and non-traditional diplomatic actors. It describes how diplomatic interaction in these issue areas contributes to the making of system-defining principles. The chapter discusses the six major issue areas of global diplomacy: war and peace, economics, development, environment, health and migration. The beginnings of a sustained diplomatic effort to create an international framework for governing global health issues can be traced back to the creation of the World Health Organization, which is affiliated with the UN, in 1948. The globalization of world politics has gone hand in hand with major increases in migration flows. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that there are close to 2.5 million trafficked persons at any given point in time.
