ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the major findings of the profile study. It also discusses major findings of the ethnographic study and the structured questionnaire. The chapter provides a discussion on western literature in light of the Hong Kong findings. It presents recommendations at different levels of social work interventions. Cultural values also play an important part in non-relative adoption. Non-relative adoption in Hong Kong is moving steadily from adult centredness to child centredness. Profile study of the adoption triangle was a comprehensive cross-sectional study of adoption in Hong Kong between 1987–1993. The profile study revealed that infertility was the primary reason for adoption in Hong Kong. The motive for adoption in Hong Kong has changed from the economic-religious-political need to that of the emotional need of the adopters. Adjustment in adoption and the possession of legal entitlement with adoption are predictors for higher stress. Adoptive parents who had higher education level experienced less stress in adoption.
