ABSTRACT

Dr. Rini Mishra, a bright, young oncologist who was born and raised in Kolkata, India, to emigrant parents, immediately felt a pang in her heart as she examined the teenager. Rini’s ancestors came to Kolkata from Rajasthan, the dry desert land of the western part of India, to earn a livelihood. They never went back. Eventually they adapted to the Bengali ways of life. Rini’s Bengali was smooth and fluent, without any foreign accent. She went to study abroad after completion of her MBBS degree from the Calcutta Medical College. As she grew up, her grandfather always told her stories from the myths and legends of India. Maybe that was why the land fascinated her. Once she finished her 104studies in the US, she came back to serve the people of her homeland. There was also another reason for her return. She did not want to think about it then. It was a personal reason.
