ABSTRACT

This book is about the socio-economic integration of migrant groups into Dutch so ciety and their cultural integration. The question is: in what way does cultural integra tion affect the socio-economic integration of immigrants and, likewise, how does socio-economic integration contribute to their cultural integration. We assume that the relationship between cultural and socio-economic integration is circular and that both processes may facilitate each other. This is not to say that one of the two aspects of the integration process may not be more important or fundamental but that that is an empirical question. First, we will define the relevant aspects of the integration process and present research that shows which factors affect this process. This includes societal conditions affecting the integration process, such as the immigration and integration policies of nation states and the attitudes of the host population towards immigrants. In addition, different aspects of the cultural socialisation of immigrants within their families and of the effect of education on their cultural and socio economic integration will be studied. Finally, we turn to the question of causality and test what comes first in the complex process of acculturation of immigrants in the Netherlands: cultural or socio-economic integration.
