ABSTRACT

The comfort and safety of driving can be improved by the development of a new driver assistance system. Within an interdisciplinary project called S.A.N.T.O.S., the Institute for Road Design of the Dresden University of Technology developed the driver assistance system Curve Speed Assistant (CSA) for this purpose. The CSA system supports drivers in their choice of speed by adopting a safe speed on curves. For this study, the safety potential of this driver assistance system was determined. Safety potential is measured by the number and severity of avoidable accidents using CSA and is based on accident databases from the statistical offices of various German federal states. Specific accident patterns were used for analysis purposes. The results of the investigation show the huge safety potential of CSA in avoidance of accidents, especially regarding accidents with casualties.
