ABSTRACT

This paper presents results from an analysis of a survey of drivers conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1996. The emphasis of the study is on drivers' information requirement in several different setting, e.g. commuting to and from home. The rationale is to explore local drivers' information requirements before developing the so-called intelligent systems locally rather than buying from overseas, a system which does not conform or is less likely to be used by local motorists. The study used various kinds of methods in order to gather more relevant data concerning drivers' information needs and to examine the advantages and disadvantages of the method used. The findings showed that local motorists would like to have more information for different kinds of journey purposes. In addition, their information requirement is also reflected in their journey purposes. The findings, which are discussed in the context of past research on information requirement, provide insights into what kind of information should be presented to drivers for certain types of journey purposes. The study also discussed the findings in relation to the implication of the designing of local drivers information systems.
