ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a collection of diplomatic documents describing Britain's relations with Eastern Europe from 1979 to 1982, with special focus on the crisis in Poland. It explains the draft record of the Heads of Mission Conference on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The chapter also presents letters written by Mr J. Bullard to Mr Holmer regarding British/Romanian relations, written by Mr Pridham to Lord Carrington on dissidents in Poland, written by Mr Cloake to Lord Carrington regarding the two faces of Bulgaria: A Valedictory. It also presents the letters written by Sir C. Keeble (Moscow) to Lord Carrington on the Soviet Union, Poland and Eastern Europe and written by Mr Bolland (Belgrade) to Lord Carrington on Prime Minister's visit to Belgrade. The chapter focuses on solidarity national congress and the polish crisis and its implications for the rest of Eastern Europe.
