ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the prospects for local bus transport in Great Britain in the light of the 1998 White Paper and its daughter documents, and the subsequent Transport Act 2000 and the ‘Ten Year Plan for Transport’. It builds on earlier work by the authors (Mackie and Preston, 1996; Mackie, 2001; Preston, 1999, 2001) by briefly considering the recent past and the immediate future of the British bus industry.
