ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to the literary conventions that characterize the diary genre, focusing on six defining conventions: the diary subject; diary readers; diary time; beginnings, endings, and middles; space and image; and silences and concealments. It concludes by addressing common ways of misreading diaries and provides suggestions for how to avoid these missteps. This chapter includes Essential Question #3: Why are some diaries written in code?
