ABSTRACT

Industry 4.0 is one of the world’s most recognized catchwords describing the latest developments with regard to manufacturing in the age of digitization. These developments do not only offer to better cater for individual customer demands but also to optimize whole value chains with regard to costs, resource demand and other sustainability related KPIs. Even though a great number of enterprises have started to systematically collect shop floor data, they still face major challenges in extracting the insights from the collected data necessary to optimize the sustainability of production. One major barrier is that already widely deployed methods and tools to compute sustainability related KPIs are pushed to their limits when having to deal with the high volume, variety and velocity of data available in digitized manufacturing environments. By interpretation of the computation of sustainability KPIs as a Big Data Analytics problem, this paper shows the major steps to be taken to realize industry 4.0 ready computation of sustainability KPIs.
