ABSTRACT

Teaching young designers to incorporate sustainability principles in their everyday practice is fundamental to lead society in a more sustainable path. In this sense, this paper aims to compare the inclusion of sustainability disciplines in Brazil in Portugal. For that, disciplines related to sustainability in design courses from both countries were audited. The study shows that Portugal has a slightly more even distribution of disciplines and they concentrate at master level. Brazil has sustainability disciplines in almost all bachelors in some regions, while other regions have none or very few. There are still many courses in both countries that have no disciplines related to sustainability. This paper is part of a doctorate research which is analyzing sustainability education in both countries, the quantitative research presented here will be followed by study cases which will evaluate the nature of sustainability topics being taught as well as their presence.
