ABSTRACT
Newspapers have been implementing measures aimed at a sustainable development in a slow and poorly coordinated manner. Since paper is the element with the most environmental and financial impact in the production of newspapers, decreasing in their sizes should continue to even smaller formats than the current ones. In order to examine in more detail how some format reductions were made, and their main effects on layout, some quality papers cases were analyzed. In order to verify that size reductions can be made with the least possible loss of content, news and advertising, a design experiment was carried out with a prototype in half-Berliner format. The results indicate that the micro formats have good potential towards sustainable development in its different dimensions.
