ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the phenomenon of South-South migration in the era of globalization. It focuses on the political economy of labour migration within the Greater Mekong Sub-region of Southeast Asia and investigates cross-border migration from Cambodia and Laos into Thailand, and a related pattern of internal migration in Yunnan Province in China. The book presents a comparative study of Cambodian migrant workers returning from Thailand. It focuses on labour migration from Bangladesh, and an examination of the socioeconomic impact of remittance income, at the household level. The book explores the impacts of migration and remittances for migrants and their households from a different perspective. It investigates the social as well as economic impacts of cross-border and international migration and remittance at migrant household level.
