ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMSR) generally, the more specific focus is on Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Yunnan Province in the People's Republic of China (PRC). It is useful to provide some background on Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam as migrant 'sending' countries and, therefore, as remittance recipients. In terms of non-illicit labour migration, it is impossible to know the extent of movements in these border areas. Barney has noted that labour migration on the Laos-Thai border has precipitated change in agricultural practices. As this mobility of agricultural labour occurs as a 'youth out' migratory process and does so in concert with shifts in government policies to land use. In regard to temporary worker migration from Yunnan, the International Fund for Agricultural Development conducted research involving 1,500 rural households from three townships in Eshan County, Yunnan Province.
