ABSTRACT
Korean shamanism has been transformed according to the capitalism on which contemporary Korean society is based. Shamanic work was not a part-time vocation, but instead a full-time job for many Korean shamans, such as Soh Bosal. They made a living by their shamanic work. As the ritual place was approximately 40 metres away from the spot where the car was parked, we had to carry all of the ritual paraphernalia to the place by hand. This job was not easy because there was no moonlight and a steep valley between the car and the ritual place. ’The shamanic temple was a quite big, three-storey building, including a basement. It had two different ritual sections - one for Buddhist rituals and one for shamanic rituals. While Buddhist gods were displayed upstairs, shamanic rituals were performed in the basement, which had been specially designed to conceal the noise of shamanic musical instruments.
