ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with purchasing activities that take place after the issue of a purchase order. It presents the issue of purchase order amendments, expediting, dealing with shortages and various aspects of stores administration. Comparisons are made between the treatment of materials as general stocks and as materials purchased and stored specifically for a project. Purchase order amendments should be prepared on official forms and authorized in the same way as purchase orders. The amendment procedure is often used to add one or more items to an existing order. Projects of sufficient size can justify the allocation of a buyer or small group of buyers and expediters to the project, and this can improve the motivation and control. The project manager should be motivated by a sense of personal involvement with the success of the project. Pareto's discoveries have led to the acceptance and use of the 'Pareto principle'.
