ABSTRACT

In the broader Italian context, the first decades of the twentieth century were characterized by the uneven development of Italy as a nation. With the rise of fascism in Italy in the 1920s, the segregation and isolation of persons with disabilities became increasingly apparent. The field of disability studies has adopted a perspective that emphasizes psychological, social, and environmental considerations. The Italian Constitution granted several inviolable rights to every child, regardless of living condition. In Italy, at the end of the 1970s and at the beginning of the 1980s, the first experiences of school inclusion were realized for students with disabilities. However, it is worth noting that despite the commitment and work of many people, the Italian model has been marked by frequent failure. Additionally, in Europe and Italy people are living a "global financial crisis", with several consequences on work and employment.
