ABSTRACT

In 1983 Trevor Horn set up his own record label called Zang Tuum Tumb, which quickly became known simply by the initials ZTT. Horn had already established something of a reputation for himself as a record producer, musician and composer, but through the creation of a record label he precipitated a new period in his career. From its inception, ZTT was a highly image-conscious company intent on selling a complete pop product: ZTT was very much a "hands on" operation for Horn and he conceived of his label in terms of corporate identity both for sound and image. The Liverpool band was discovered by Malcolm Gerrie of the now sadly defunct Channel Four music show, The Tube. The Frankies were given a small budget by Gerrie with which to make a video for screening on the show. The success of Frankie Goes to Hollywood was firmly built on the production and sale of singles.
