ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how far human capital ideas help us understand African labour market incorporation. It analyses the attributes of workers, and examines their training in Iberia. The chapter examines the characteristics of African job turnover in Iberia, and explores the relevance of skills to it. It also examines the role of immigrant networks with more official channels that Africans may use to obtain employment. To understand the lack of relation between years in formal education and patterns of incorporation into Girona labour markets. By contrast with Spain, there is a slight tendency for more qualified jobs to go to those with higher levels of formal education in Portugal. The trend is for job turnover in Iberia to be accompanied by restricted geographical mobility. The literature suggests that central to a change of job is the role immigrant network playing in providing information about job availability.
