ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the state of affairs with regard to corporate community involvement in Munich and identifies barriers to cross-sector collaboration. It focuses on two projects that are more or less related to corporate community involvement. The two projects are Munich in Artificial Light and the Munich Business-plan Contest. The chapter examines the community involvement of three relatively active companies. The companies are BMW, Siemens, and Stadtsparkasse. Munich accommodates very large companies such as the headquarters of Siemens and BMW, but also numerous, very vital, small and medium-size businesses, notably in the innovative information and communication technology branch. Private enterprise in Munich also participates in initiatives aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship. The Munich model is made up of four layers: self-chosen work, stable social commitment, working hours, and social commitment as a form of training. In Munich, people and politicians appeared wary of business interfering in culture and in the dressing of public space.
