ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines qualities and skills that appraisees and appraisers can use and develop. Appraisal in schools has the purpose of promoting professional, hence curriculum and collective, development through cooperation between an appraisee and an appraiser. It depends on cooperation between team leaders and teachers, teaching assistants or members of administrative or non-teaching staff. Appraisal provides a point of periodic, face-to-face contact and entails appraisers' observing appraisees in action. More accurately, appraisal applies to everyone, including supervisors, managers, leaders and headteachers, who tend to be appraised by individuals who supervise, manage or lead them, either within the organisation or from outside. Appraisees and appraisers develop mutual respect and understanding. There are some of the qualities and skills that appraisers need and can continue to develop: discretion and confidentiality, listening and questioning, confidence, tact, fairness and empathy and commitment to using the process to inform continuing professional development.
