ABSTRACT

Emotions are a core feature of human social interaction. Over the last decades, tentative evidence has accumulated indicating that sex hormones affect emotional processes. Therefore, in the present chapter, we aimed to provide an overview of how major sex hormones affect emotional processes ranging from emotion perception to regulation and emotional memory as well as empathy. Due to the heterogeneity of previous findings and limited consensus on the definite direction of effects, future experiments are urgently needed to establish a firm connection on the action of sex hormones on emotional processing.
