ABSTRACT

The microgenetic approach is a scientific tool and perhaps the most developmentally centred framework in developmental psychology. This chapter explores Bob Siegler's scientific and personal contributions both to the science and to the living community and his dedication, wisdom, and patience. It presents the issues of both the art and the craft of carrying out microgenetic research. The chapter discusses the potential benefits of recent developments in information technology to microgenetic research. It explains why the microgenetic approach is so important to developmental psychology and illustrates its core issues with the examples. The data collected in microgenetic research are very rich in terms of variability: the data vary across sessions, between and within individuals and experimental groups; the data often include different modalities, such as answers, response times, or self-explanations. Obtaining developmental and learning information from the Big Data and other digital data is a challenge for the microgenetic approach.
