ABSTRACT

Otis Elevator, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, is the world's largest manufacturer and servicer of elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and shuttle systems. Otis Elevator is the most profitable subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation. Otis Elevator's core products include elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and shuttle systems. The Tianjin Otis Company has two local partners, the Tianjin Lift Company and China International Trust and Investment Corporation. Factors affecting Otis's industrial environment all fall within Porter's Five-Forces Model. The five forces are: competition, suppliers, consumers, new entrants, and substitution. Otis Elevator enjoys a competitive advantage through maintaining a low-cost strategy. Although the elevator is not seen as a technologically demanding product, Otis knew that there was a potential threat from Japanese manufacturers who tend to be technologically intensive. Finally, Otis is able to provide products and services that are tailored to meet the needs and requirements of local markets.
