ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses and analyzes what Chinese firms are looking for from foreign partner contributions. It elaborates how Chinese firms should appropriately evaluate foreign firm's critical capabilities and identifies strategic, organizational, and financial attributes that are important to Chinese business satisfaction with the performance of international joint ventures. The chapter presents a conceptual framework on the relationship between dynamics of Chinese firms and their needs in selecting foreign investors. It reports methodological issues involved in study on how Chinese firms perceive partner selection for their joint ventures. From the perspective of Chinese firms, a foreign partner's technological capabilities, foreign market power, and international marketing expertise are important strategic attributes to look for. The chapter presents the major findings from the analysis of the survey. It addresses the issue in a general context, that is, to identify such capabilities that are important for regular Chinese companies when they select foreign candidates in a general environment.
