Type 2 diabetes has long been a major health concern for older adults, as it is strongly associated with age-related declines in insulin sensitivity. However, recent demographic trends have precipitated an unprecedented increase in the occurrence of diabetes and its associated health complications in older individuals. The convergence of the epidemic of obesity with worldwide population shifts toward a higher proportion of older adults has created a serious public health challenge in the form of obesity- and age-related diabetes [1].
